Do we think the evolution of energy technology and supply has stopped dead?

Looking at the history of energy, one would think not. First it was the burning of wood, until it was realised there was an inconvenience. It was getting a bit thin on the ground - quite literally due to deforrestation. The next major source of energy was coal. Coal also gave rise to the birth of the chemical industry with dye's etc, and also enabled the extraction of gas from coal, which became know as Town Gas - not to be confused with Natural gas.

Gas lighting from town gas was common before the onset of electricity. Electricity then became a viable technology and demoted other technologies. Underground reserves of crude oil, and natural gas, also play a part in the energy equation. So it can be seen that energy technology eveolves. Even now, the Automotive industry is looking at ways of moving away from vehicles powered by deisel and petrol. Energy evolution is still happening right under our noses; now; today.

So why, in this day and age of continued energy evolution and Mankind's ability to choose his technological destiny, does society behave in a way that suggest power stations and electricity grid infrastructure will play a dominant role for many year's to come? Is it because technological leadership is lacking?

Quite clearly electricity supply to buildings from power stations and a national grid should not continue for that much longer. The resulting Co2 emissions are unacceptable. Despite the proliferation of power stations in certain parts of the world, history demonstrates energy evolution will happen and thus national grid supply will become an outdated model. Think about it. Shortly after electricity became a significant power source around the turn of the 20th century, certain events were destined to happen for it to become viable. The technology of the time (it was the only forseable technology, so it had to be used) meant that 3 things had to happen.

Loans to improve energy efficiency of buildings are becoming available in a manner that doesn’t cost the homeowner. Houses can be improved with nothing to pay except a lower monthly energy bill. Here’s how it works:- When the work is complete, the homeowner pays a lower energy bill. However, the bill is adequately high to cover the cost of the energy used as well as a re-payment of the improvement loan. It's called 'Green Deal Finance' (Full details...)
